Pacific Solitude

As the sun settles beneath a layer of coastal clouds, the Pacific Ocean stretches toward the horizon in deep blues, golds, and amber light. Waves roll steadily across the shoreline while distant sailboats and the Marina del Rey jetty add scale to an otherwise quiet scene.

Captured from the sand at Playa del Rey Beach, this moment reflects something that had become increasingly important—slowing down enough to actually enjoy the place I called home.

For years, I had been told the same thing by someone I considered my OG: “Go to the beach.”

He had known me since my early days after college, when we first met through my first job in Virginia. Over the years, our relationship grew into a genuine friendship. He understood my pace—always moving, traveling, building something, handling business—and he kept reminding me that sometimes you have to stop and enjoy what you’ve already built.

Living in Los Angeles, the beach was practically in my backyard. Yet it took years before I really made it part of my life.

Eventually, I listened.

I started making the beach a ritual. If I wasn’t traveling or tied up with something else, I’d go on the weekend. Sometimes I’d finish the day, look at the clock, and realize I was only a few minutes away from catching the sunset. I’d grab my little fishing chair with the built-in cooler, find a quiet stretch of sand, bundle up against the surprisingly cool coastal air, and simply sit.

Playa del Rey Beach became one of those places.

On this evening, I was also experimenting with a new gimbal, taking photographs, recording video, and playing with different perspectives as the sun disappeared behind the clouds. But underneath all of that was something much simpler: I was finally learning to take in the blessing of being there.

I remember thinking about how long I had lived in Los Angeles without really doing this. I had been so busy chasing the next thing that I hadn’t stopped to appreciate what was already right outside my door.

Sometimes you don’t have to travel somewhere new to discover something. Sometimes you just have to finally slow down enough to see where you already are.

That became part of my Los Angeles lifestyle—the ocean, the breeze, the sound of the waves, and an hour or two where nothing needed to happen.

Playa del Rey Beach is a scenic stretch of coastline on the west side of Los Angeles, known for its wide sandy shoreline, Pacific Ocean views, coastal sunsets, and relatively relaxed atmosphere. Located near Marina del Rey, Ballona Wetlands, and LAX, the area offers a quieter coastal experience while remaining close to the rest of the Los Angeles region.

Playa del Rey is a laid-back coastal community situated between Marina del Rey and the Ballona Wetlands. Its open shoreline, residential streets, walking routes, and proximity to the Pacific give the neighborhood a more peaceful character than many of Los Angeles’ busier beach destinations. For me, it became more than a place to visit—it became a nearby escape and personal ritual.
