After years of hearing about it, finally experiencing Jazz on the Square brought a different kind of energy to Lawrenceville, Virginia.
Captured on August 22, 2026, this aerial photograph preserves a late-summer afternoon when music, family, food, and community filled the historic downtown square.
For a place I had spent years mostly passing through, watching from the car, or visiting for family occasions, seeing Lawrenceville come alive like this made the moment worth documenting.

Some places become familiar without ever really being experienced.
Growing up, trips into the country often meant passing through Lawrenceville on the way to somewhere else. As I got older, the town remained part of the landscape—somewhere along the route, somewhere remembered, somewhere I had heard stories about.
There were family stories from older generations, memories shared during long drives, and years of watching the town change—or sometimes seemingly not change at all.
Then, a few years after returning to Virginia, an older cousin told me about Jazz on the Square.
I remember thinking: They have a jazz festival in Lawrenceville?
I looked it up.
It sounded like something worth experiencing.
For the next few years, the timing never quite worked out. Then in 2026, I decided I was finally going.
My older cousin was planning to attend with his children and family, so we packed up the cars with chairs, supplies, and everything needed for an afternoon outside. His newborn grandson even came along.
When we arrived, family members were already there. Chairs were set up near a family connection in the community, and suddenly a place I had spent so many years simply passing through became a place where we were actually spending time.
The square was filled with people.
Children were playing. Families were gathered. Food trucks lined the area. Vendors were working. Music was coming from the stage.
There was face painting for the kids, local businesses participating throughout town, and people moving between the performances, food, and gathering spaces.
The event also had the practical details covered, including portable hand-washing stations near the restrooms and food area—a small detail, but one that stood out as a thoughtful touch during a crowded outdoor event.
I walked around taking in the scene, looking for different perspectives and photographs.
After spending time with family and getting something to eat, I headed out to capture the event from another perspective. From above, the scale of the gathering became even clearer: a small Virginia town transformed by music and community.
The view captured here became one of those perspectives.
The afternoon lineup included performances from the Brunswick High School Marching Band, Feature Attraction Band, an Earth, Wind & Fire tribute band, and Painted Man Band, with DJ performances and other activities throughout the event.
But the music was only part of what made the experience memorable.
What stayed with me was seeing Lawrenceville filled with life.
For years, my memories of passing through the area were connected to family trips, stories from older relatives, and occasions that brought us through town for reasons that were often much more serious.
This time was different.
There was music.
There were families.
There were children running around.
There were people sitting together in lawn chairs.
There was food, laughter, conversation, and a downtown square being used the way a community gathering place is meant to be used.
For the first time, I wasn’t simply passing through Lawrenceville.
I was there to experience it.
And that distinction matters.
Sometimes documenting a place isn’t about discovering something famous or traveling somewhere far away.
Sometimes it is about finally stopping long enough to see something that has been sitting in your own memory for years.
Jazz on the Square became that moment for Lawrenceville.
