A Familiar Place
Some places become meaningful because of what happens there. Others become meaningful because of what they help you remember.
Captured on April 25, 2026, at Roslyn Landing Park along the Appomattox River, this photograph began as a family day spent outside—walking the trail, sharing conversation, spending time together, and remembering someone deeply loved.
I almost missed the moment entirely.
After arriving later than planned, I joined the group as everyone was making their way back toward the starting point. We walked together through the park, talking, laughing, and taking in the trees, river, and fresh spring air.
When we returned near the parking area, I wandered toward the water.
Then I saw the rock.
The Cleeeezy™ View
At first, it was simply a large boulder sitting along the riverbank.
Then something about it felt familiar.
Years earlier, someone in my family had shared a photograph and video with me from this same place. In the image, he was lying back on the rock, looking toward the sun. In the accompanying recording, he reflected on the rock, the sun, the river, and the healing qualities of nature.
I remembered enough of the moment to wonder:
Could this be the same rock?
So I walked closer.
I sat down on it, looked out across the river, felt the surface beneath my hands, and took in the air around me. For a few moments, I wasn’t thinking about the group, the plans, or anything else waiting beyond the park.
I was simply there.
And then I knew.
It was the same rock.
When I went back and asked him, he smiled and confirmed it.
That small discovery changed the photograph for me.
What could have been just another picture of a riverbank suddenly carried a history I already knew.
The painted stone resting on the boulder became another small detail in the story—a bright piece of human expression sitting quietly against the much larger landscape of water, trees, stone, and sky.
The moment also felt especially fitting for the day.
This gathering had brought family together to remember, reconnect, and spend time outside, in a place where nature had already been part of meaningful memories. There was something almost circular about returning to that same environment and finding the same rock again.
Sometimes we don’t choose the meaningful moment.
We recognize it when we find it.
The river kept moving. The trees stood quietly along the opposite bank. The sun continued across the afternoon sky.
And I sat on a rock that had already held a memory before I ever knew I would need one.
